If you are familiar with the game of Chess you know that a Pawn is a useful game piece. The lowly Pawn is used sacrificially to facilitate the movement of more powerful game pieces. From the start of the game, the player understands that pawns must be sacrificed in order to win the game. They are expendable.
In a similar way, those who trek thousands of miles to cross the Mexico/USA border are Pawns in an political and deadly game. Those who embark on these dangerous quests are sacrificing everything for an opportunity to escape oppression and build a better life. The U.S.A. may offer a chance at a better life, but does freedom from oppression await these brave travelers?
Many immigrants save for years and sell everything to hire a Coyote “a person with the roll of providing direction and safe passage across the border”. Although the price is high, it is often more expensive or impossible for the traveler to access The U.S. through legal channels. The Cartels employee most of the Coyotes’ using these immigrants as an income stream. Often times when the traveler reaches the border, they are kidnapped and held for ransom to extort even more money from family or contacts on the U.S. side.
Once on U.S. soil, with nothing more than the clothes their back immigrants quickly look for employment, which will likely pay a lower wage, without any benefits or government assistance. In addition, the threat of deportation is always looming.
Finally, immigration is a huge political talking point for the Left and the Right. Frankly, a problem neither side really wants to fix. The influx of immigrants cause population increases and often switch congressional seats from Red to Blue. During each election season immigration is constantly among the top 5 issues on the ballot.
Whether it’s the Cartels and Coyotes exploiting the immigrant for financial gain, the employer stateside looking for cheap labor or the political party looking for votes. These immigrants move from oppression to oppression, being used like a Pawn in a deadly game for the benefit of the corrupt and powerful overlords on both sides of the border. One thing is certain, these individuals are not Pawns. They are mothers, fathers, daughters and sons with dreams of a better life and they are not expendable.
