If you genuinely care about solving the homeless crisis, you must ask yourself one question. “Are my actions assisting someone towards getting off of the streets, or assisting them in continuing a life on the streets?” Either way, your actions are impacting the individual and the greater issue.
Why is panhandling such a problem?
Consider a quote from a formerly homeless man, “Panhandlers are con artists. I should know, because I used to do it for a living, not because I couldn’t get a job, but because it was the easiest money I ever made. I’ve changed my ways and now have a respectful job. Ninety-nine percent of them are con artists, and the other 1 percent maybe do need help, but there’s help out there”
I’ve seen studies suggesting that 60% of cardboard sign-holding panhandlers aren’t even homeless. In addition, approx 85%, if they are homeless, use the money donated to further their addictions. In my personal experience, everyone in this group would rather eke out a meager existence on the streets, than utilize programs designed for long-term success. Most just want to avoid any type of responsibility or social obligation.
These may seem like harsh words, but they are true.
If you listen to the modern narrative around homelessness, the mainstream news, and politicians, they blame inflation, high-cost housing, or low wages as the real problem behind the homeless crisis. Although these are genuine issues, they are used to divert your attention from the actual problems and potential solutions. Higher wages, lower-cost housing, or a strong economy won’t fix addiction, mental health issues, apathy, irresponsibility, or outright laziness. Supporting a cardboard sign-carrying con artist takes away resources and attention from those who are actually trying to get off the streets or want to participate in programs designed for long-term change.
When we feel the urge to help, please donate to a legitimate homeless program designed to assist each individual on the path towards self-sufficiency and long-term success.
Let’s be honest, the $10 you’re giving to the panhandlers is easing your conscience while allowing you to ignore the larger problem.
I have attached a link to a wonderful program in Colorado that has a very high success rate in assisting formerly homeless individuals toward a happy, healthy, and successful life of self-sustenance.

Be part of the solution, don’t feed the growing problem.
