As kids, we are all asked the question “What do you want to be when you grow up”? Common answers usually include; astronaut, fireman, professional athlete, or even President of the country. This is an important question for sure. It is good to set goals and have a vision to keep you motivated towards achieving your goals, but I think there may be a more important question to ask. “Who do you want to be when you grow up”? The latter focuses more on one’s character, ethics, and worldview. It is possible to accomplish all of your professional and financial dreams yet live a miserable existence. It seems that true contentment comes, at least in part, from the kind of person you are rather than just the successes you’ve attained
At 52 years of age, you’d think that I’ve already experienced most of the “growing up” that is going to take place. Physically this may be true, but emotionally and spiritually I’ve never been more focused on becoming someone better. When I was younger my goals centered around attaining a title or position that would bring influence and financial success. But these days, my focus is much more on becoming a person of high character and integrity. This likely stems from looking back with many regrets concerning my behavior, standards, and lack of personal accountability. Maybe you can relate to me on this? If so, I would like to share my prayer with you.
This prayer was written generations ago and modified to fit my personal goals. I often recite this prayer because not only do I believe that God hears and assists in our earnest cries, but also that repeating these goals daily helps to enforce our transformation. In addition to sharing this prayer, I want to break up my daily petition into sections and reflect on each section in upcoming posts.
May we all strive to become better people every day for the sake of a world that is hurting and in need of healing.
Here is my Prayer:
Lord, give me the strength to live for you today.
Help me to avoid cowardice, but in boldness, face the day’s difficulties and duties.
Assist me with being a godly husband in mind and action.
Keep me from losing faith in people. Despite meanness, stress, or frustration, let me approach others in a conscientious and calm manner.
Lord, help me to quickly forgive the little stings from others and quickly apologize for giving them.
God help me to live a fearless life of honesty and integrity.
Do not allow my failures to dishearten me, or steal my confidence.
Lord, let my life be a mirror constantly reflecting your light to others.
Open wide the eyes of my soul, so that I may see good in all things.
Reveal today some new piece of my vision puzzle.
God, let me be inspired and overwhelmed with your spirit of joy and gladness.
God help me to be a full cup of strength for those who are hurting and thirsty.
Bring to me those divine opportunities to serve your creation in love and selflessness.
In the name of our strong deliverer and only Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
